Suppose an investigator interviews a random sample of motorists to determine how far each motorist travels per week on shopping and pleasure trips. He has been told that there is a close correlation between the distances motorists travel and their sex. In order to check this assertion, he divides his sample into male and female motorists, and then does a t-test to determine whether the mean distances are significantly different for the two sexes.
