Technological systems today are highly dependent on the interaction between humans and machines. The reliability of this interaction is consequently essential for the reliability of the joint system. The systematic study of how this interaction can be analyzed, described, and designed and how the reliability can be assessed is therefore of primary importance. Regardless of whether the interaction is seen as a temporary necessity due to the lack of complete automation or as an essential aspect of the system’s functionality, there are three main problems that face practitioners in the field of Man-Machine Interaction (MMI): How to design the MMI to meet the functional requirements, particularly with regard to safety & efficiencyHow to account for the impact of human action on the process (planned and unplanned interventions), andHow to evaluate and/or validate the efficacy of the proposed design vis-a-vis the anticipated human performance.
