Abstract

SAMA’s supervision of the Saudi banking sector is examined, as well as evolution of the Saudi banking sector in the period of globalization. The Saudi commercial banking sector’s performance in supporting the Saudi economy is assessed including financing the neglected SME sector, as well as the growing role of the Public Investment Fund in the Saudi banking sector with planned mega Saudi bank mergers. The implication of a rising sovereign and domestic foreign currency debt is analyzed, along with options to control government expenditure under Vision 2030 constraints.
