Most computer graphics applications only need two-dimensional (2D) pictures. This is why the GKS effort first concentrated on standardization of a 2D graphics system. Now, GKS is well developed and the GKS working group can devote more effort to a three-dimensional (3D) extension of GKS. In important application areas, 3D graphics are needed to represent 3D geometrical objects. Computer aided design is an important example, but also such areas as chemistry or medicine often require 3D graphics. A major influence has come from presentation graphics (3D bar charts, 3D geographic representations) and from computer animation.
