Abstract

In Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, we promoted cooperation between a farmers’ cooperative, firms, and local administrations to advance an enterprise using agricultural waste. We used tomato stems, 30,364 t of which are produced annually in agrarian areas of Aichi, as the principal raw materials. For cost reduction, we studied novel and effective methods for bio-ethanol. With these methods (a heating and high-pressure fluid mill system and novel small water-amount saccharification system), saccharification efficiency became two to four times greater than that of the conventional method, and energy use in the distillation process was decreased to 1/8.
