In den vergangenen 30 Jahren erlebte die Tschechische Republik eine Demokratisierung, ökonomische Transformation und Neudefinition des Nationalstaates. Sie verfügt heute über konsolidierte demokratische und marktwirtschaftliche Institutionen, die jedoch durch die Ballung ökonomischer, politischer und medialer Macht bei dem amtierenden Ministerpräsidenten herausgefordert werden. Der von ihm repräsentierte technokratische Populismus steht im Gegensatz zur liberalen Idee einer demokratischen Gewaltenkontrolle und hat zur politischen Polarisierung beigetragen.
