This introductory chapter aims to spell out the basics of entropy, maximum entropy frameworks and their applications in some fields. Applications are selected so as to avoid possible overlaps with the ones contained in this volume. Though the contents in this book are largely concerned with uncertainty of random phenomena, a brief overview of uncertainty manifesting in various other forms is also given.
