The aim of UPAS is to provide a common programming model and programming environment for the project partners within the SFB. Based on the MMK message passing library several tools have been developed to support programming parallel computers. Interactive tools for debugging, performance analysis and visualization and an automatic tool for load balancing were implemented and tested. Experiences from users revealed issues of improvement that have to be considered in future research. Additional flexibility and performance is provided by an adaptation of the programming environment to workstation nets.
