A severe problem in Software Engineering is to support the development of software systems that arise by slight modifications of existing ones without being forced to do a complete redesign. In this paper we take a very general point of view regarding such software systems as complex objects and represent them in semantic networks using part-of-relationships and constraints on the parts. We present an algorithm W* that constructs variants defined by changes to some concepts involved in an object definition. W adapts local constraint propagation techniques to generate first a generalization and then a specialization. We discuss the power of W* in relation to what was the intended result of changing components.
