The subject of this section of the conference program is the outlook for the future. Previous speakers have presented new and exciting ideas for future scientific investigations of the continental basement. My paper concerns a different, but also important question for our future—namely, how deep drilling for largely scientific rather than applied targets will be incorporated into national policy formulation and decision making.
