Workshop Summary: Recommendations for a Scientific Approach to Safety Assurance for Environmental Introductions of Genetically-Engineered Organisms

This report summarizes the consensus of an international group of 35 scientific and regulatory experts who participated in a NATO workshop in June 1987, co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation, ILSI-Risk Science Institute, and the Society for Risk Analysis. The objectives of the workshop were: to evaluate the available safety assurance and risk assessment methods for environmental introductions of genetically-engineered organisms,to establish a basis for improving the available methods, andto develop principles for conducting scientific assessments.
