A Comparative Study of the Corrosion Electrochemical Properties and Microstructure of High-Nitrogen Steels

Abstract

Stainless steels have high corrosion resistance in various environments, including acidic ones. The passivation of such steels occurs due to a dense oxide layer of the spinel type, which spontaneously forms on the surface. In this study, the microstructures of three stainless steels (namely, VNS53, a new VNS53-M steel alloyed with niobium and vanadium, and AISI 321 steel chosen as the base for comparing experimental data) were investigated. The obtained data are compared with the results of corrosion electrochemical studies. It is shown that there is no significant decrease in the corrosion resistance of these steels in the tested electrolytes. This result is especially important for high-nitrogen stainless steel of grade VNS53-M, which has a complex alloying composition leading to the formation of the carbide and nitride phases in the structure of the material.
