A Review of the Annual US-DOE CLEERS Conference: Trends in Real Driving Emissions, Novel Catalyst Technologies, and NOx Reduction

The annual conference on catalysis and emission-control technologies brought a number of experts together for three days. Intensive discussion on the latest developments in emissions control technologies followed; this article gives a brief overview. The main trends observed are the following: Real-world driving emissions and PEMS will be a game changer. Emissions need to be reduced for real drivers in real conditions; this is a major engineering challenge. The extensive research on SCR, LNT, DOC, and filter technologies is producing really solid basic understanding of the important mechanisms. Low-temperature catalysis remains a major challenge; some progress is reported. Integration of catalysts in filters is advancing rapidly—CDPF, SCRF, TWCF, and DPNR.
