Abstract

This research demonstrates the utilization of spatial arrangement investigation methods for earthquake series generated along Chaman Fault in Balochistan region to put an effort to identify clusters, discover local and global spatial configurations for the incident of earthquakes occurred from 1900 to 2017 with geographical information system (GIS). The preferred method in this research was global Moran’s I, Getis–Ord Gi*, quadrant count analysis, Getis–Ord general G, kernel density estimation, average nearest neighbor, Anselin Local Moran’s I and geographical coverage of the data. Each method was executed in the GIS, so that calculations could be conceded out rapidly and proficiently. Outcomes exhibited that such methods are proficient of identifying clusters in the spatial configurations of earthquakes. Both local and global spatial statistics suggested that earthquakes are populated in the northern Balochistan where the Chaman Fault bends and have higher seismicity. This study also reveals that earthquakes with higher magnitudes are particularly intense in the north Balochistan region where earthquake activities are utmost active along Chaman Fault. Lastly this study also shows that earthquakes having moderate magnitudes were predominantly rigorous in southern Balochistan because the region is formed from continental rifting giving no recognizable spreading centers of earthquakes. We conclude from this research that the pattern investigation methods applied earthquake catalog in Balochistan province along Chaman fault could spot clusters from the events of earthquakes.
