A thermal–optimal design of SOI-integrated microdisk lasers

Abstract

The thermal resistance of the hybrid microdisk laser is quite high, which leads to low continuous-wave (CW) output power caused by high temperature rise. In this paper, we propose an optimal structure to improve the thermal properties of SOI-integrated microdisk lasers. A static analysis of the thermal characteristics as well as the CW output power evaluation of the hybrid InP-based microdisk laser is presented to show the prominent effect of the optimal structure. According to the calculation, the optimal structure reduces the thermal resistance by 64 %, and improves the CW output power remarkably.
