Academia-industry collaboration on cellulose—past and future

The year 2020 marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Cellulose Society of Japan (CSJ). The CSJ started its activities as an academic society in 1995. Before the establishment of that society, there was no place for researchers in Japan to meet and discuss cellulose: that compound is related to an extremely wide range of fields, including pure chemistry, polymer chemistry, fiber chemistry, paper science, textile science, forestry, forest products science, and pharmacy. Accordingly, the late Professors Jisuke Hayashi, Takeaki Miyamoto, and other founders from industries established the CSJ to promote new developments in cellulose science for the twenty-first century by bringing industry and academia together.
