Activities of UNESCO for Natural Disaster Reduction

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, has been engaged since 1960 in the assessment and mitigation of risks arising from natural hazards of geological origin (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and landslides), and has contributed to the study of hazards of hydrometeorological origin (storms, floods, prolonged droughts, desertification, and avalanches). The social and educational programmes also address the preparedness for and alleviation of consequences of disasters of technological origin.
