Abstract

The new advanced multi-phase FSCW is a unique winding configuration. Unlike the common windings, it offers a variety of operating modes, e.g. the generation of various number of pole pairs, the separate control of their amplitudes and frequencies, and therefore, it has the potentials to compensate several parasitic effects in the machine. This paper studies these capabilities in detail by analysing various winding configurations, by implementing different modes, and by comparing their MMF behaviours. Further, an 11-teeth/10-pole PM machine equipped with the new advanced multi-phase winding has been investigated and compared with a common three-phase and 12-teeth/10-pole PMSM. It is evident that the new design can work with the force compensation method to reduce the critical radial force modes. Therefore, this technique was implemented in the new machine to avoid the noise problems. Moreover, concerning the cogging torque and torque ripples the multi-phase design shows substantial enhancements.
