Abstract

It is important to have the ability to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions of each step of the fuel’s life cycle. In many cases, the amount of emissions from extraction, process, or combustion of the fossil fuels is not clear. It is apparently very necessary to curb the national emission level to mitigate its impact on global warming.
In this respect, 2000 and 2005 CO2 emission inventories of Turkey have been calibrated in the MARKAL optimization model with the energy consumption of those years within the Turkish energy system and projected toward 2025 in a 5-year period. Emission results of the base scenario established have been analyzed. The CO2 emission coefficient per activities for fuel types consumed in various technologies in 2000 and 2005 is found out.
Moreover, in this paper, the amount of CO2 is estimated from the combustion of the primary energy carriers at the beginning, before being processed or combusted in plants or other end-use technologies in a scenario using two types of CO2 emission factors. A comparison study on the various estimation scenarios is made to offer a recommendation of best CO2 estimation method. Ratios of CO2 to electricity production are found for Turkish power plants.
