An efficient phase selective gelator for potential use in dye removal based on styrylpyridine and cholesterol derivative

Abstract

An efficient phase selective gelator Y1 based on styrylpyridine and cholesterol derivative was designed and synthesized, which showed phase selective gelation behaviors towards aromatic solvents from their biphasic mixtures with water. This enables the gelled aromatic solvents to be separated by filtration and both aromatic solvents and the gelling material to be recycled by distillation. Organogels with remarkable gelation ability in various solvents were characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR and HR-MS. These studies revealed evident roles of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions in the gelling process. Interestingly, the Y1-p-xylene organogel efficiently removes dyes by 61.85−99.5% (bromocresol purple, brilliant green, bromocresol green, malachite green and gentian violet) from their corresponding aqueous solutions. The efficient removals of aromatic solvents and toxic dyes suggest potential applications for the treatment of wastewater.
