Andrew Scull is one of those rare sociologists whose work is highly valued by historians; indeed, he is widely regarded as one of the foremost historians of psychiatry in the Anglo-American world. For more than a half century, he has explored the history of madness and of the efforts of mad doctors, alienists, asylum superintendents, psychiatrists, and neurologists who have attempted to diagnose, manage, and even treat increasing numbers of unfortunates identified as mentally ill. His latest book (his 18th by my count) consists of sixteen previously published papers now revised, including ten book reviews. …
