The developments in technology over the last few years have greatly increased the practical applications of Information Theory. However, technological progress has been so rapid that many would-be communications or information engineers have been unable to develop the necessary theoretical background on which real understanding and progress depend. An understanding of the principles of Information Theory is essential in order to exploit the great potential in practical applications that are now available.
