Aquifer characteristics in the basement complex of Lere, Kaduna North western Nigeria

Abstract

The ability of an aquifer to transmit water in economic quantities in wells depend upon the aquifer characteristics which include Hydraulic conductivities(K), Transmissivity(T) and Storativity(S). All were determined using Jacobs straight line method. Aquifer characteristics provides information to identify the various water producing units for groundwater prospecting and management of the aquifer system. The aim of this study is to determine the aquifer characteristics in parts of Lere, Kaduna in North western Nigeria. Pump test data of 25 boreholes within the study area were used to determine the aquifer characteristics of the area. Transmissivity values ranged between 0.262 and 107.9 m2 /day, the hydraulic Conductivity value ranged from 0.0069123 to 3.12016 m/day, Specific yield values for the area is from 0.00001 to 0.99. The Static Water Level is between 17 and 30.92 m. The discharged rate Q is between 0.001 and 0.9 m3 /day. After computation the determined values of Static Water Level, Transmissivity T, Hydraulic Conductivity, and Specific yield was taken to Geographical Information System environment, color-coded into ranges to produce the various maps using Surfer 10 software. The study established that basement aquifers typically produces low to medium yield.
