Car manufacturer Volvo is intensifying its collaboration with chipmaker Nvidia. Future Volvo models will use Nvidia Drive Orin SoC technology, starting with the Volvo XC90 in 2022.

Next-generation Volvo models based on the SPA2 modular vehicle architecture will use Nvidia’s Drive Orin System-on-a-Chip (SoC) technology. The AI-equipped computing platform for automated driving communicates with back-up systems for braking and steering, as well as software. This is developed internally and by Zenseact, Volvo’s autonomous driving software company. The additional computing power and graphics processing also enables the use of lidar technology from Luminar. Nvidia Drive Orin will be used in the Highway Pilot of the new Volvo XC90, which will be unveiled next year.

With the centralized computer architecture, future Volvo models based on SPA2 are basically designed for automated driving. The core computer, which manages basic software, energy management and driver assistance systems, among other things, is also powered by Nvidia technology (Drive Xavier SoC) and works together with the autonomous driving computer. “With the help of Nvidia Drive Orin, we can take the safety of our next generation of vehicles to a new level,” says Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Volvo Cars.
