The assassination of statesmen captures our collective political imaginations in a way that few political acts can; they are a tricky and dangerous business whose plots demand secrecy, their principled claims aim to ennoble their otherwise bloody deeds, and their success or failure often changes the direction of entire communities. Political assassinations thus appeal at once to our love of justice and to our lurid fascination with both blood and “the conspiratorial” making them all too tempting to romanticize. It is not surprising then that they are a favorite theme for poetry and drama. …
