Excerpt

Capacity-Based Market for Electricity
A forward market for electricity, which direct investments a few years ahead of when electricity needs to be delivered. Power plants receive compensation for capacity, i.e., the power that they will provide at some point in the future.
DSO (Distribution System Operator)
An entity responsible for the electricity distribution in a given area and ensuring that the energy sold by retail suppliers is transported to the end customers.
Energy-Based Market for Electricity
A market where electricity is like any other commodity, bought wholesale and resold to consumers at retail prices. Payments compensate power plants for the energy produced and sent into the grid.
Grid Balancing
The process that ensures maintaining the electrical grid frequency stability, within specified and predetermined ranges, by equaling the overall withdrawals and overall electricity injections.
Ramp Rate (Power Plant)
The rate (e.g., MW/min) at which a power plant can increase or decrease the power output.
TSO (Transmission System Operator)
An entity responsible of transmission grid (joining generators and DSOs) operations in a defined area and bilaterally also for interconnections with other TSOs and also responsible for the grid operation and security of supply in its respective area.
