Biology of Pheromones

Early research on pheromones of insects and subsequent identifications of active compounds were often accompanied by promises of new and exciting methods for control of specific insect pests. However, in spite of some limited success, recent investigations on the use of pheromones in pest management systems have done much to dispel the early optimism. Some skepticism about the potential of pheromones may well be justified, but many conclusions have been based on misconceptions or incomplete information. A full understanding of an insect’s biology, behavior and ecology appears to be necessary to evaluate each situation.
