“Divining a Digital Future” is an important book in that it summarizes a lot of the intellectual work that Paul Dourish and Genevieve Bell have produced over the past ca. 10 years. Among the highlights are the introduction and the first main chapter ‘Contextualizing Ubiquitous Computing’. These provide a critical account of Weiser’s original vision and its rhetoric power (the myth as organizing vision or story), critique the rhetorical ‘proximate future’ device employed in much of current UbiComp literature in light of the practical realities of the UbiComp of the present (introducing the central theme of messiness), and introduce snippets from studies of other cultural contexts that provide a glimpse of an alternative UbiComp. The focus is on how the rhetoric of Weiser’s UbiComp vision has been utilized to drive (and channel) research rather than on the envisioning process itself (something recently unpacked by Reeves (2012)). …
