Abstract

This chapter explores how Korean civil society has been operating as middle-level leadership in interdependent peacebuilding. The chapter conducts a case study on the Christian ecumenical movement in the Korean peninsula, one of the earliest and most well-recognised efforts to bring people from North and South Korea together. With the assistance of the World Council of Churches (WCC), South and North Korean ecumenical organisations were able to realise the first non-governmental meeting between the two Koreas in 1986, in Switzerland, since the Armistice Agreement of 1953. The chapter analyses the role of the ecumenical movement in the Korean peace process and explores the potential of civil society in filling the interdependence gap in peacebuilding.
