The paper by Johnson et al. (2002) makes a useful and timely contribution to the evaluation of pumping tests in layered aquifer systems. The authors emphasize that a numerical flow model had to be used because their layered conceptual model could not be represented with any single analytical technique. This is further explained by mentioning assumptions that limit the use of some analytical techniques. Examples are given, referring to the solutions of Hantush and Jacob (1955) and Hantush (1960). In this comment I would like to point out that another approach is feasible. …
