Ford plans to introduce three new electric passenger cars and four new electric commercial vehicles in Europe by 2024. From 2026, more than 600,000 electric vehicles are expected to be sold annually in Europe.

Automaker Ford is taking the next step toward an all-electric future in Europe. It plans to introduce a new generation of seven all-electric, connected cars and vans by 2024. The announcement builds on the company’s recent announcement that it has established a new global business unit – Ford Model e – focused on the development, production and sales of electric vehicles. Together with Ford Pro, Ford’s commercial vehicle business unit, the two business units are expected to shape Ford’s future in Europe.

With its expanded range of passenger car and commercial vehicle models, Ford expects annual sales of more than 600,000 electric vehicles in Europe in 2026, underscoring its intention to achieve a 6 % EBIT margin in Europe in 2023, the automaker said. Ford’s said its goal was to sell more than two million electric vehicles worldwide by 2026, as well as to achieve a company adjusted EBIT margin of 10 %.

Two all-new e-sport crossovers planned

Following the introduction of the all-electric Mustang Mach-E in 2021 and the Mach-E GT this year in Europe, as well as the upcoming launch of the E-Transit next quarter, Ford plans to introduce seven more all-electric vehicles for Europe – three new passenger cars and four new commercial vehicles.

Starting in 2023, Ford plans to begin production of an all-new all-electric passenger car at its plant in Cologne (Germany). It will be a mid-size, five-seat sports crossover with a range of 500 km. The name and vehicle will be unveiled later in 2022. From 2024, production in Cologne is to be expanded to include a second new all-electric model – also a sports crossover. In addition, the Ford Puma is to be available as an all-electric vehicle from 2024, but will be produced in Craiova (Romania).

This will bring the number of electric vehicles produced at the Cologne plant to 1.2 million vehicles within six years, Ford said. The investment in the new electric passenger cars produced in Cologne is thus expected to amount to two billion U.S. dollars. The investment in the Cologne Electrification Center is said to also include the construction of a new vehicle battery assembly plant, which is expected to start production in 2024.

New electric models in the Transit range

Ford has also announced four new electric models in the Transit series. Launching in 2023 will be the Transit Custom in the one-ton van segment and the Tourneo Custom full-size sedan, also produced in Craiova. The next generation of smaller vehicles, the all-electric Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier, will then follow in 2024.

Ford’s plant in Craiova is expected to play an important role within the company’s electric and commercial vehicle growth plans in Europe, according to the automaker. Subject to regulatory approvals and consultations, the Ford Otosan joint venture plans to take ownership of Ford’s Romanian manufacturing operations.

Commercial vehicle battery production facility in Turkey

In support of Ford’s plans to electrify its vehicle fleet, Ford, SK On Co, Ltd. and Koç Holding have signed a non-binding letter of intent for a new joint venture in Turkey. Subject to the signing of a final agreement, the three partners plan to "establish one of the largest commercial vehicle battery production facilities in Europe," Ford says.

The joint venture would be based near Ankara and produce nickel-rich NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) cells for incorporation into battery modules. Production is expected to begin in the middle of the decade. The planned annual capacity would be 30 to 45 G.
