Why do companies employ engineers? Obviously it is to solve any engineering problems they may have. If this is true, it assumes that companies have a deep-seated interest in solving such problems. As this seems unlikely, we need to ask why a company might want the solution to an engineering problem. The lifeblood of a company is profit. Remove it and the company will die; increase it and the company will thrive. Engineers are employed for the same reasons as other professionals — to help improve and maintain company profits. It therefore follows that if all the employees are working towards the same goal, the more closely they cooperate with each other, and the more likely they are to be successful.
