Cost optimization of reinforced concrete flat slabs of arbitrary configuration in irregular highrise building structures

Abstract

A model is presented for cost optimization of reinforced concrete (RC) flat slabs of arbitrary configuration in irregular highrise building structures. The model is general and can include any combination of columns and shear walls in the plan with or without openings and perimeter beams. A general cost function is formulated for flat slabs of arbitrary configurations taking into account not only the cost of concrete and steel materials but also construction cost. The nonlinear cost optimization problem is solved using the robust neural dynamics model of Adeli and Park. The methodology was applied to two flat slab examples in a real-life 36-story building structure. The methodology not only automates the process of RC slab design but also results in cost savings in the order of 6.7–9 %.
