Abstract

The scale, scope, and effects of the 2008 global financial crisis revealed several lapses in the regulatory, corporate governance, and operational strategies of banks. Understanding the changes and recent trends in global banking is essential for appraising the policy and practical strategies of future banking in Africa and other developing regions. This chapter employs thematic content analysis to examine the changes that have occurred in global banking since the crisis; including power shifts, regulatory changes, corporate governance issues, and operational strategies, among others. In addition, the chapter also discusses the current challenges and opportunities in global banking and the role of information communication technology and financial integration. The implications of these changes for future banking in Africa are also highlighted.

For the purpose of this chapter global bank/banking is a bank/banking system with presence in all the continent, and/or a bank with a commercial presence outside its home country, by way of at least one branch or subsidiary. Global banks are considered to be foreign owned if they are controlled by a shareholder or group of shareholders from outside the licensing jurisdiction. Control over a bank can be exercised if an individual or entity holds more than 50% of shares in a bank, subsidiary or branch. In case where there is no majority shareholder, the bank is still classified a foreign bank when a foreign minority shareholder has a controlling stake in the bank (Beck et al., 2014). In short a bank with commercial presence outside its home country.

According to Obstfeld (2015) and Claessens (2017), achieving any two of the three objectives of fostering cross-border financial integration, preserving national resolution authority and maintaining financial stability is easy, but achieving all three together has proved to be herculean task for most countries.

4
Banks now focus more on being socially responsible, taking part in the larger effort to ensuring society’s safety by boosting surveillance architecture, enhancing safety measures at branches, and increasing their rural services.
