The mechanical behavior of rock materials is of great interest in geo-engineering, foundation construction, rock structures and underground excavations (Hoek et al. 1995). Knowledge on the damage process has a fundamental role in evaluating the rock structural integrity. Most commonly, the damage and fracture behaviors of such materials have been characterized by uniaxial compression strength, shear strength and tensile strength (Jaeger et al. 2007), which have been widely used in engineering, e.g., the performance prediction of tunnel boring machines. …
