This paper deals with the assessment of external perturbations in nonlinear chaotic dynamical processes using an extended Kalman filter treatment. We consider processes that can be modelled by a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and we use the extended Kalman filter to estimate the size of external perturbations. As an example to illustrate this approach we have analyzed a lower order spectral model of the atmospheric circulation with a perturbed equator-pole temperature gradient.
