Although electric machines have been used in many areas for around 150 years, they have only been used as the main drive for mass-produced automobiles for less than two decades. The development or optimal adaptation for use in passenger cars and commercial vehicles is therefore still in its infancy compared to the internal combustion engine. Electric powertrains are likely to undergo the same maturity process; both technically in terms of drive layouts, operating strategies and the materials used, and through economies of scale in terms of cost. …
