Abstract

The article under discussion, whilst providing generalized accounts of the effects of waterflows in karstic formations, fails, in the opinion of this respondent, to substantiate the claims that an immediate threat is posed to the continued preservation of the monuments at Tāq-e Bostān, the focus of this response.

They make the same case with an added laboratory-based analysis of freeze–thaw cycling on stone samples from Taq-e Bostan in another article published by Springer in Environmental Earth Sciences (Ghobadi and Torabi-Kaveh 2014).

2
However, one looks at it, in order to make the suggestion that such a treatment will mitigate the effects of freeze–thaw cycling, as their second paper seems to imply (it is not clearly stated), one would have expected that such freeze–thaw cycle tests would also have been carried out on a set of HCT-treated blocks of the same limestone for comparison—see (Ghobadi and Torabi-Kaveh 2014).

3
Interestingly, samples from the monuments which I had analyzed by the British Museum, confirmed the presence of 'scialbatura', a natural and protective calcium oxalate layer, extant on large areas of the complex, especially those more sheltered from water flows.
