Time flies when one is busy editing. I stole a glance back these days and suddenly realized that I have served as EiC for the Data Science and Engineering Journal (DSE) for more than 2 years. And I realized that it was my turn to announce an important change of DSE leadership, after Prof. Elisa Bertino did so in December 2017. The announcement is that Professor Timos Sellis has joined DSE as Editor-in-Chief!
Prof. Sellis has been active in DSE-related researches for several decades and is bringing strong leadership and scholarship to the journal. I am thankful to Timos for his willingness to serve. I look forward to working with him for the important next episode of this journal’s development.
At the same time, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Prof. Elisa Bertino, for her leadership of the journal for the past 4 years. She was one of the founding EiCs of the journal and was instrumental to the establishment and development of the journal. It is not an exaggeration to say that Prof. Bertino is the “mother” of the journal.
DSE was established to publish original results in research, design, development, and assessment of technologies that timely address relevant challenges in data and data-intensive applications. Sponsored by the Technical Committee of Databases (TCDB), a technical society under the China Computer Federation, the journal publishes papers following an open access policy and has published regularly with four issues each year for the past 4 years. The published papers are from some of the internationally well-known relevant conferences and selected from a large number of submissions. The paper selection process follows the best practice of the high-quality journals in the field, and the papers finally appear in the journal have all gone through a rigorous review process. As a result, we have seen many citations and downloads of the DSE papers, with great satisfaction. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our authors, the editorial board, our reviewers, as well as DSE staff from Springer Nature and CCF TCDB.
With Timos on board, we are sure that the journal will continue to be a high-quality publication venue for relevant and exciting research. We welcome researchers to propose new special issue topics and submit their papers. And finally, we hope you will enjoy this issue and future issues of DSE.
Timos Sellis is a Professor at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, where he is also the director of the Data Science Research Institute. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1986. He has served as a faculty member at the University of Maryland (1986–1992), the National Technical University of Athens (1992–2013), and RMIT University (2013–2016) and was the inaugural Director of the Institute for the Management of Information Systems of the “Athena” Research Center (2007–2013). He has published over 260 articles in the general area of database systems. Prof. Sellis is a recipient of a Presidential Young Investigator (USA, 1990) and a VLDB 10 Year Paper (1997) award. He was president of the Greek National Council for Research and Technology (2001–2003). He is IEEE Fellow (2009) and an ACM Fellow (2013), for his contributions to database systems and data management. In March 2018, he received the IEEE TCDE Impact Award, for contributions to database systems research and broadening the reach of data engineering research.
