Transmissions make a decisive impact on the efficiency and operating costs of mobile machines. This fact has been well known for some time, but today it is more relevant than ever before. This is because emissions legislation, such as Tier 4 final and also Euro V, which will be coming into force soon, requires transmissions to meet higher standards. In the same way as in the field of engines, significant advances have been made in gearbox development. Nowadays, an extremely wide range of transmissions is available. However, the application is what ultimately determines the type of gearbox used and its design. For example, power-split, continuously variable transmissions with a hydrostatic variator are the most common solution in agricultural machines. The studies carried out by RWTH Aachen University and GIF-Entwicklungsgesellschaft show that new developments have been made in this area. …
