Über dieses Buch

Tobias Aberle examines how an entrepreneurship training helps disadvantaged youths in rural parts of Bihar, India, to cope with structural conditions that enable or constrain them. The present research reveals that young entrepreneurs can be divided into two groups: those who developed personal initiative and thus coped with limiting structural conditions very proactively, and those who solely behaved in a reactive way. For many entrepreneurs, the self-employed activity was only a Plan B, as in reality they sought for high-prestige career jobs. IFor entrepreneurship training to become a tool of empowerment, the range of training must be significantly adjusted in accordance with young trainees’ social and educational backgrounds. In addition, a functioning ecosystem for entrepreneurship education must be in place, which ensures support for individual entrepreneurs through mentorship and networks.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
In India – the country with the world’s largest youth population – vocational training and the creation of adequate job opportunities for the young generation constitute one of the country’s most urgent tasks. The realization of these tasks becomes extremely staggering in the light of the country’s enormous regional disparities. Despite great expertise within the country, a large bulk of the Indian population lives in poor living conditions, being cut off from the economic boom.

Chapter 2. Theoretical Framework
Abstract
These quotations outline the scope of the present chapter. Whereas Prahalad (2014, 25), a renowned American-Indian economist, recognizes the economic potential of the masses of the poor with this opening statement from his global bestseller, The Base of the Pyramid, the main interest of the present work lies more with the issue of bringing poor people to a place of being resilient and creative entrepreneurs. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi pins the hope of the nation on its youth, speaking not of one billion heads, but two billion arms, in order to emphasize their practical abilities.

Chapter 3. The Research Question
Abstract
It is now time to focus on the general research question (3.1), which constitutes the key element of the present dissertation, towards which the theoretical framework has been oriented. This general research question will be further subdivided into specified research questions (3.2), according to which the further breakdown of the theoretical framework has in turn been undertaken. This breakdown is illustrated in Figure 5, which summarizes the key findings from the previous chapter’s theoretical considerations.

Chapter 4. Methodology
Abstract
This chapter addresses the methodology of this dissertation. The research method needs to be in harmony with the object of research. From an epistemological point of view, the present research starts from the assumption that society is socially constructed through the activities of individuals.

Chapter 5. The Field Survey in Bihar, India
Abstract
This chapter focusses on the field survey in the Indian state of Bihar, which was conducted during the winter of 2015/2016. Its goal is to introduce the different training centres visited in the surveyed region, and to provide an overview regarding the scope of the survey, listing the number and the different types of people that have been interviewed. Figure 8 provides an over-view of the two target regions in Bihar, which have been chosen as the regions where Drishtee – the main cooperation partner for this project – operates its training centres.

Chapter 6. Analysis
Abstract
This chapter presents the findings of the qualitative text analysis. This analysis follows the methodology introduced in Chapter 4, which itself aligns with the general and the specified research questions set out in Chapter 3. The first part of this chapter, the evaluative qualitative text analysis, starts with a category-based analysis of the findings from the entrepreneurs, which adheres to the category system, being divided up by the different dimensions of empowerment (6.1).

Chapter 7. Conclusions
Abstract
The main goal of the analysis carried out in the preceding chapters was to gain insights into the opportunities of empowering disadvantaged youth through entrepreneurship training. In considering these young entrepreneurs within the area of tension between agency and structure, together with their personal motivation and aspirations as they transition into adulthood, the analysis revealed that they developed different livelihood strategies, depending on their development of personal initiative and the degree of determination which they possessed in relation to their personal aspirations. Based on these findings, different types of entrepreneurs have been identified, which have specific implications for the training providers and further societal and political stakeholders that are engaged in the planning and realization of entrepreneurship training.
