Experimental and numerical simulation of a ring and wings-open-ended pipe pile

Abstract

The purpose of this work was to experimentally and numerically analyze the behavior of an innovative open-ended pipe pile. The original open-ended pipe pile has been enhanced by incorporating an outside hollow ring with a unique shape and steel plates attached on the external pile surface near the tip that resembled wings (contrary wings (CW)). These wings have unique dimensions that relate to the pile's diameter (D). These piles were experimentally simulated using a physical model that was created especially for the task. The numerical simulation compares the bearing capacities of the ring and wings-pipe piles, which were tested in loose, dry sand and had a 40 mm diameter (D) and an 800 mm length, with those of the ordinary hollow piles (L). According to the testing findings, the novel pipe pile model is superior to both open-ended and closed-end pipe piles, with bearing capacities of 274% and 148%, respectively. The confined soil inside the pipe pile, inside the external ring, and inside the external reverse wings are all modeled using numerically using finite element software. Additionally, it covers the methods used to simulate the ring-wing-open-ended pipe pile using finite elements. The simulation results demonstrate that modeling using Midas GTS NX offers a good understanding of the passive and active soil arching processes of the restricted soil inside the pipe pile, which could not be predicted experimentally or using conventional modeling techniques.
