From a geological engineering perspective, the episodic nature of massive rock slides can be explained by brittle tensile fracturing and time-dependent strength degradation (Eberhardt et al. 2004; Martin 1997). In this study, we focused on assessing rock mass strength degradation mainly through deformation of the rock mass, shear-plane development, and progressive rock slope failure over time. Although the testing procedure for rock strength has been standardized by the American Society for Testing and Materials and the International Society for Rock Mechanics, the process is time-consuming and expensive (Fener et al. 2005). …
