Abstract

The layered architecture is key to understand both traditional and IoT networking scenarios. In this context, IETF introduces a five-layer architecture that divides the communication system functionality in physical, link, network, transport, and application layers. This chapter deals with these layers from the perspective of traditional networks. It explores the main characteristics of wireline and wireless physical layer technologies and how they are related to link layers. It introduces the IP network layer and discusses the most common transport layers. Finally, it introduces several application layer protocols that support session management in both traditional and IoT solutions.
