Abstract

This article carefully examines the women with whom the artist, Prince Rogers Nelson, was most closely associated and the potential messages about colorism those relationships suggest. The author examines the issue from a personal perspective, as one who grew up idolizing Prince and as someone whose appearance did not reflect that of the women Prince flaunted. One overarching question asks: Was Prince a victim of colorism, as well as a perpetrator of it?
