This special issue of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A is dedicated to Professor James C. M. Li for his 90th birthday, and contains papers presented in the symposium on “Micromechanics of Advanced Materials III″: at the “Materials Science & Technology 2015 Annual Meeting” held in Columbus, Ohio, on October 5, 2015. It is the third symposium of a series symposia dedicated to honor Professor Li for his distinguished lifetime contributions in materials science. The first symposium of “Micromechanics of Advanced Materials” in honor of Professor Li′s 70th Birthday was held at TMS Annual Meeting in Cleveland, on October 29 1995, and the second symposium of “Micromechanics of Advanced Materials II” in honor of Professor Li’s 80th Birthday was held at TMS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, on February 13, 2005. These symposia brought together professor Li’s long-time colleagues and associates, all internationally known materials scientists, friends, and students in the field of micromechanics and materials science to provide a forum for exploring the future advancement of micro- and nano-scale material behavior, as well as a forum to inspire and motivate the new generation researchers to follow in the field of Micromechanics of Advanced Materials.
