There is an approximate half-century tradition within TMS of organizing and sponsoring events in the dynamic behavior of materials. Some of the most prominent TMS members contributed to the field. Notable among them, the following scholars made seminal discoveries: C. Zener and J.H. Hollomon (shear bands), C.S. Smith (first dislocation model for shock compression), J.E. Dorn (constitutive behavior and thermally activated mechanism of dislocation motion), Hans Conrad (dislocation thermal-activation rate equation), H.C. Rogers (shear banding), J. Weertman (high-speed dislocations and modeling of shock front by dislocation movement), U.F. Kocks (constitutive modeling), R.W. Armstrong (grain size effects and constitutive modeling), G.
