To apply the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) approach as formulated by Hall and Soskice (2001) to the far removed margins of the post-Soviet space without doubt involves a good deal of conceptual stretching. For a variety of reasons Georgia is a nut that is especially hard to crack. The expansion of a concept that has clearly been formulated with reference to the advanced economies of the OECD world is rendered difficult by more than just the sheer scale of the dramatic economic downturn Georgia has experienced after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, with a GDP of less than half the 1989 level in 2005.
