In recent years, there has been an exponential rise in the number of wireless standards such as 802.11 a,b,g,n (and more), 802.15 (Bluetooth, Zigbee, UWB), WCDMA (and several modes), CDMA 2000 (1xEV-DV, 1xEVDO), Wireless USB, and 802.16 (various modes) to name just the most prominent standards. The abundance of standards today is the result of a desire in the industry to support new applications, with each standard custom-tailored to a specific operating environment and spectrum. It is not hard to envision that wireless coverage will be pervasive in the future and will support a variety of applications that are undreamed of today. …
