I would like to begin by stating the obvious: in no way am I qualified to comment on the very illuminating paper that Professor Cox has presented. What I am going to do, therefore, is to change gears immediately. I will emphasize a major hangup in the reliability community’s understanding of even the most elementary notions of point processes, by showing how the techniques described in Cox and Lewis (1966) have been almost ignored by that community. This is in spite of the statement, Cox and Lewis (1966, p. 7) that “Industrial failure data form one of the most important fields of application for the methods of this monograph”.
